Red-eyed Tree Frog

This amazing frog is commonly known as "Red-eyed Tree Frog" or "Rana Calzonuda" in Spanish. Its scientific name is Agalychnis Callidryas. It has big red eyes, an intense green body with blue and yellow stripes, orange feet and a white belly. Males measure around 6cm while females are bigger, growing up to 7.5cm. Its different colors make this frog one of the most photographed frogs in the world. Its camouflage is excellent by shrinking into a small form, hiding its eyes and colors with its legs and body, becoming part of any green leaf. Usually they don't move a lot, making them a great subject to photograph. For this composition I wanted to emphasize the big red eye. This image was taken in Sarapiquí, Costa Rica.

Green and Black Poison Dart Frog

The Green and Black Poison Dart Frog is native to Central America and some parts of South America. These tiny frogs can measure around 20mm. Taking this image was a challenge while the little frog kept jumping around. I like the blurred background due to the shallow depth of field used, the deep green of the leaves and the intense turquoise color of the frog which contrasts with its black spots. This image was taken in Sarapiquí, Costa Rica.

Strawberry Poison-dart Frog

The Strawberry Poison-dart Frog (Oophaga Pumilio) in this image is the "blue jeans" color morph. It has an intense red and orange body, blue legs with black spots and black eyes. They measure in average 20mm and live in humid environments. It is a huge challenge to work with these small subjects that move constantly. Image taken in Sarapiquí, Costa Rica.

Ghost Glass Frog

The Ghost Glass Frog is also know as the Limon Giant Glass Frog. The eyes of these frogs point forward and they have a green body with exception of their throat and belly which are transparent. You can actually see their internal organs and that's why the are called "Glass Frogs" or "Ranas de Vidrio" in Spanish. An adult can grow un to 3.7cm in length, however this one was about 2cm. They are common in Central America and this image was taken in Sarapiquí, Costa Rica. The eyes of these tiny frogs are fascinating.

Red Drop

I took this image at Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area, Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The ladybug was walking and feeding all over the plant, I decided to get down low and close with my camera mounted on a tripod using a macro lens. The red color of the ladybug makes a nice contrast with the purple of the flowers. The shallow depth of field blurred the grass in the background becoming a nice green canvas, enhancing the flowers and the ladybug in the foreground. I took as many shots as possible and the artistic look and composition of this image made it my favorite.

Dragonfly

Dragonfly image taken at Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area near Calgary, Alberta, Canada. While I was looking for flowers to photograph I saw this dragonfly on the grass. The morning was still too cold for it to fly, which allowed me to set my camera on my tripod and get close enough to capture it in this nice composition.

Going Up

This image was taken at Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area, Calgary, Alberta, Canada. This little caterpillar was going up moving constantly and struggling with the wind. A total challenge for a macro shot; fortunately this image turned out great. The shallow depth of field blurs a portion of the caterpillar in the foreground and all the background giving the impression of a nice canvas where the main subject stands out. It’s a composition where less is more.

Fly

This fly was standing still on a leaf long enough to let me compose this shot and manually focus. Using a shallow depth of field with the lens at its maximum aperture blurred the areas in front and behind the fly. It’s a simple composition where the main subject stands out. The colors of the fly make a nice contrast with the predominant green on this image.

Foreign Terrain

The bark of this tree had a rich texture and this bright yellow and orange fungus. A shallow depth of field blurs a portion of the foreground and most of the background, adding interest to the composition of the image and an artistic feel to it. The high level of detail on the texture of the bark and the fungus stand out using this technique. This image looks like a volcanic, foreign terrain. Prairie Smoke

Spring always comes, sooner or later. This mysterious looking flower is called "Prairie Smoke". Can you spot the three little green insects? Taken in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Dandelion

I was looking for a white dandelion to photograph and there were many to choose from, but this one had a nice round and complete shape. A shallow depth of field was used to draw the attention of the viewer to the fine and delicate details of the dandelion’s core.
